A series of celebratory events to mark seven decades of secondary education in askeaton were launched at a ceremony in colaiste mhuire last week.

last Friday, the anniversary of the first day of second level education in askeaton a committee of past pupils gathered to launch the 70th anniversary celebrations in the school. they were joined by Mrs. Nora hawkes, former principal and the woman widely instrumental in ensuring the continued provision of second level education in askeaton. also present were three past pupils from the 1940/1941 classes, Margaret Ryan, Mary Mann and Eva Neville, who were delighted to meet students and share their memories.

up to 17th September 1940 askeaton one of Irelands towns did not have its own second level school, but on that day 70yrs ago two teachers pollie o'mahony and bess o'shaughnessy, rented rooms in the town library and together with 19 students established st Mary's secondary school. today the town boasts a state of the art community collage, colaiste mhuire, under the auspices of the co. limerick V.E.C. with over 500 students and 40 staff.

in 1945 Mrs. Nora hawkes joined the teaching staff of the school becoming principal two yrs later. in 1963 with over 100 students the school moved to new premises, the former protestant school and the site of colaiste mhuire today. with the advent of free education in 1968 the school flourished and in 1994 st. Mary's amalgamated with shanagolden V.E.C. school and colaiste mhuire community collage was established.

the planned events for the year include a dinner dance at the south court hotel in limerick on sat November 20th and a mass at st Mary's church askeaton for deceased students and teachers, to take place at 4pm on Sunday November 21st.

a plaque to commemorate st. Mary's secondary school founder, pollie o' Mahoney will be unveiled at the library on Sunday November 21st at 2.30pm .
